Settled in 1829 and named for a traveling professor, known as Professor Stockbridge, Stockbridge Georgia, with the zip code 30281, is home to nearly 25,000 residents. In 1881, The East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railroad was to pass through Stockbridge through Atlanta and Macon. During this time the owners of the land asked for such a high price for the land that two prominent citizens took it upon themselves to buy the land and offered lots at reasonable prices. On August 6th, 1920 Stockbridge was incorporated as a city. In recent history, May 6, 1992, Mayor Kelley received a letter from a John Stockbridge of South Carolina requesting a letter from the city to the attendees of the first reunion of the Stockbridge family. In this letter, he informed the Mayor that he was the great-great-grandson of Levi Stockbridge. Levi was born on March 13th, 1820 and would've been 27 when the town was granted a post office, adding credibility to John's story. The city was fascinated with the new information because prior to the letters arrival, they only knew him as Professor Stockbridge. Although the letters and conversations point to the great-great-grandfather of the author of the letters, the rightful Professor Stockbridge has been unknown for 146 years.
